Did you always know becoming a hairstylist would be in your future? What made you fall in love with it? I didn't always know it, I never had a lot of exposure to the industry growing up but doing hair came pretty natural to me which led to me often doing my friends' hair for events. I went to hair school thinking it would be a good, fun job while I was still in college trying to develop the path I wanted to go down. As my skills and experiences developed and I got more exposure to what the...
What has your journey been like in your career? Did you always know that you wanted to be in the food industry? I kind of fell into the food industry as it's my family business, my father owned an Italian Restaurant in New York City for 32 years. I majored in Politics and African American studies in college and dreamed of joining the Peace Corps and becoming a development worker in sub-Saharan Africa. Alas, I graduated college in 2009 and there were literally zero jobs. So I started working at my father's restaurant to supplement the part time $12/hour...
Where I come from, everything has meaning. Different colors mean different things, animals embody certain distinct characteristics and even everyday objects are significant within different cultures in Ghana. What I do is that I take a lot of inspiration from these concepts and use them to craft my own myths which then show up in my work.
Actor. Director. Musician. You speak french. Is there anything you cannot do? A handstand. You started acting when you were just a kid, how do you think that shaped your career vs those who get involved later? I learned how to do my taxes when I was 12. I had my first kiss on camera. Being a kid actor felt a little like sitting on a phone book in the driver's seat of a semi. For me, anyway. Lately have been working a lot as a director. What is that like? Was it incredibly intimidating to walk on to set...
Singer Songwriter Q. You are a successful, working musician. I would imagine that's super hard to achieve in such a competitive industry. Has there been something that's happened that's given you a feeling of accomplishment? A. I don't know if I'd say there has been one single thing that has made me feel a sense of accomplishment or even if I would even describe myself as successful. I think that every day is different and it's important to be persistent. As an artist I've learned that people gravitate toward honesty, so the more honest I am with myself and my art the more accessible it is...
Founder - No Mo Stache Q. You founded the portable waxing kit brand, No Mo-Stache, which is being sold EVERYWHERE. Can you tell us how the company got started?A. No Mo-Stache was founded by necessity. I would always be working such crazy hours and traveling so often that I never had a chance to wax - I was pretty much a walking werewolf. I could never make it into a salon with my schedule and when I was home with access to a wax kit, my mustache never seemed to appear in the bathroom mirror enough to remind me to wax. I...
